Vice Minister for Foreign Affairs held discussions with Members of Parliament of Sri Lanka

On 30 May 2024, H.E. Mr. Russ Jalichandra, Vice Minister for Foreign Affairs, held discussions with Honourable Sujith Sanjaya Perere, Honourable J.C. Alawathuwala, Honourable Wasantha Yapa Bandar, Members of Parliament of Sri Lanka and H.E. Mrs. Colonne Appuhamillage Chaminda Inoka Colonne, Ambassador of Sri Lanka to Thailand. Both sides emphasised the close and cordial relations between the two countries in all dimensions.

Both sides agreed to promote cooperation in trade and investment, particularly following the historic signing of Thailand - Sri Lanka Free Trade Agreement in February 2024. Priorities were given to the investment in the fisheries and alternative energy sectors. The Thai side also reiterated the request for the Sri Lankan side to take good care of the two Thai elephants gifted to the Government of Sri Lanka. Both sides gave updates on the proposed visa exemption scheme for ordinary passport holders. Furthermore, in July this year, the Royal Thai Embassy in Colombo will bring 73 civil officers from Sri Lanka to be ordained in Thailand on the auspicious occasion of the 72nd Birthday Anniversary of His Majesty the King.

On this occasion, the Sri Lankan side also requested assistance from Thailand in facilitating the return of Sri Lankans stranded in Myanmar through Thailand. Thailand expressed readiness to facilitate the request.
