On 21-22 September 2022, Thailand, in partnership with the United Nations Office for Disarmament Affairs (UNODA), hosted the “UNSCR 1540 (2004) Workshop for ASEAN states” at the United Nations Conference Centre. The workshop aimed to enhance awareness and understanding of ASEAN representatives on the UN Security Council Resolution (UNSCR) 1540 (2004) on the adoption and enforcement of appropriate laws and measures to prevent the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction and their means of delivery to non-State actors. There were over 30 participants from the ASEAN Member States, the ASEAN Secretariat, as well as relevant international organisations and UN agencies.

Ms. Ek-on Khunacharoen, Deputy Director-General of the Department of International Organizations, reaffirmed Thailand’s firm commitment to the implementation of UNSCR 1540 (2004) and Thailand’s readiness to cooperate with the international community in promoting disarmament and non-proliferation of weapons of mass destruction. The Deputy Director-General also expressed Thailand’s appreciation to the UNODA, the 1540 Committee and the Government of Japan for their support in organising the Workshop.

The Workshop provided ASEAN Member States with a platform for sharing experiences and good practices on national coordination and mechanism, identifying priorities in order to implement the Resolution effectively as well as strengthening regional network.
