On 10 October 2023, Ms. Mami Mizutori, Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Disaster Risk Reduction, paid a courtesy call on Mrs. Phantipha Iamsudha Ekarohit, Deputy Permanent Secretary for Foreign Affairs, during her visit to Thailand from 8-10 October 2023. Both sides discussed ways to strengthen collaboration between Thailand and the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR).

On this occasion, the Deputy Permanent Secretary reaffirmed Thailand’s readiness to enhance cooperation with UNDRR in strengthening disaster resilience in terms of prevention, preparedness and recovery by promoting further collaboration in potential areas, including data collection, technology, capacity-building and increasing Public-Private-Partnership to raise awareness and increase investment in infrastructure. During the meeting, both sides exchanged views on promoting the operationalization of the “Bangkok Principles for the implementation of the health aspects of the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction 2015-2030” both at regional and international levels, and leveraging ESCAP Multi-Donor Trust Fund for Tsunami, Disaster and Climate Preparedness, founded in 2005 through the initial contribution from Thailand, for the achievement of the UNSG’s Early Warnings for All Initiative.

In addition, both sides agreed that organizing an event in remembrance of the 20th anniversary of the Indian Ocean Tsunami in 2024 is a good opportunity to mobilize more resources for the prevention, preparedness and response to disasters.
