The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has been informed by the Royal Thai Army that on 24 February 2026, at approximately 08:50 a.m., a 40-mm grenade round was fired from the Cambodian side towards Phlan Hin Paet Kon area, Kantharalak District, Si Sa Ket Province, while Thai troops were carrying out a routine patrol. Consequently, Thai soldiers were compelled to respond in self-defense by firing a warning shot, in accordance with the rules of engagement and fully consistent with international law.
This incident, deliberately initiated by the Cambodian side, constitutes once again a clear violation of the Joint Statement agreed upon by Thailand and Cambodia on 27 December 2025, in particular: Point 1, under which both sides agreed to an immediate ceasefire involving all types of weapons and to avoid unprovoked firing towards the other side’s positions or troops; and Point 6, under which both sides agreed not to undertake provocative actions that may escalate tensions.
Thailand expresses its grave concern over this repeated pattern of intentionally provocative behavior, which could endanger the safety of Thai personnel and escalate tensions on the ground. In this regard, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Thailand has already sent a letter of protest to the Cambodian side regarding the aforementioned violation of the Joint Statement. It has also requested Cambodia to conduct a thorough and expeditious investigation into the incident and put in place effective measures to prevent any recurrence.
Thailand reiterates its commitment to resolving the situation peacefully through dialogue and existing bilateral mechanisms. Thailand strongly urges Cambodia to strictly respect and adhere to the Joint Statement with sincerity and in good faith, and refrain from any actions that could provoke further tensions, with a view to ensuring a lasting ceasefire and peaceful border between the two countries.
