On 5 September 2022, H.E. Mr. Vijavat Isarabhakdi, Vice Minister for Foreign Affairs of Thailand, on behalf of the Thai Prime Minister, visited the Embassy of the Russian Federation in Bangkok, to sign the book of condolence following the passing of H.E. Mr. Mikhail Gorbachev, former President of the Union of the Soviet Socialist Republics, on 30 August 2022 at the age of 91. The Vice Minister was warmly welcomed by
H.E. Mr. Evgeny Tomikhin, Ambassador of the Russian Federation to Thailand.

H.E. Mr. Mikhail Gorbachev was born on 2 March 1931 in Stavropol, the Union of the Soviet Socialist Republics and assumed the position of the last president of the Soviet Union between 1990 - 1991. He won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1990 for his significant role in redefining the relationship between the West and the East. After the dissolution of the Soviet Union, Mr. Gorbachev founded the International Foundation for Socio-Economic and Political Studies or the Gorbachev Foundation.
