On 15 October 2026, H.E. Mr. Sarun Charoensuwan, Vice Minister for Foreign Affairs, delivered opening remarks at the Roundtable Discussion “Supporting Transition Towards Durable Solutions for Displaced Persons from Myanmar,” alongside H.E. Ms. Kirsty McNeill, Minister of State for International Development and Africa of the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office of the United Kingdom, at the JW Marriott Hotel Bangkok.

The roundtable discussion was co-hosted by Thailand and the United Kingdom, and was attended by Ms. Nicola Pollitt, British Ambassador to Thailand, and Ms. Pinsuda Jayanama, Director-General of the Department of International Organizations, as well as representatives from the relevant Thai government agencies, including the Ministry of Interior, the Office of the National Security Council, the Ministry of Labour, and the Ministry of Public Health. Representatives from the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), the World Bank, think tanks and civil society organizations were also present.

The Vice Minister viewed that the roundtable discussion provided an important platform for exchanging views between Thailand and the United Kingdom, as well as relevant stakeholders, on practical ways to support the Thai Government’s policy in allowing Myanmar Displaced Persons (MDPs) to work outside the temporary shelters. On this occasion, the Vice Minister presented Thailand’s key developments in promoting the self-reliance of MDPs under the said policy, such as the development of the Roadmap to address issues related to MDPs, the issuance of non-Thai ID cards and the provision of access to health insurance for them. The Vice Minister reaffirmed Thailand’s readiness to work with the United Kingdom, a long-standing partner of Thailand in supporting assistance to the MDPs, to ensure that the policy is sustainable and beneficial to both the MDPs and local communities at large.
