On 17 January 2023, H.E. Mr. João Gomes Cravinho, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Portuguese Republic, paid a courtesy call on H.E. Mr. Don Pramudwinai, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of Thailand, on the occasion of his visit to Thailand during 16-17 January 2023. Both sides exchanged views on strengthening bilateral ties and promoting cooperation in various fields such as trade and investment in EEC under Thailand 4.0. Both sides also discussed cooperation on labour, culture, language, gastronomy and tourism and agreed to convene the 3rd Political Consultations at the earliest opportunity. They also exchanged views on global developments such as situation in Myanmar, Ukraine and ASEAN.

During the visit to Thailand, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Portugal met with Thai businessmen investing in Portugal, at the Embassy of Portugal in Thailand and also visited Santa Cruz Neighborhood (Kudi Chin), a settlement of Portuguese in the capital.

This year marks 512 years since the first Portuguese diplomatic mission to Siam. Duarte Fernandes, the Portuguese Envoy, travelled to Ayutthaya and held an audience with King Ramathibodi II in 1511. The last exchange of visits between the Foreign Ministers was when the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, (then Minister of Foreign Affairs), officially visited the Portuguese Republic on 17-19 December 2019, marking the first visit in the level of Foreign Minister in almost 30 years.
