Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Thailand to Attend the 37th ASEAN Summit and Related Summits

H.E. General Prayut Chan-o-cha, Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Thailand, will join other Leaders of ASEAN Member States and the Secretary-General of ASEAN for the 37th ASEAN Summit and Related Summits via videoconference during 12-15 November 2020 at the invitation of H.E. Mr. Nguyen Xuan Phuc, Prime Minister of the Socialist Republic of Viet Nam, in his capacity as the ASEAN Chair for 2020.

Leaders of Dialogue Partners of ASEAN, namely China, Japan, the Republic of Korea, India, Australia, New Zealand, the United States and Russia as well as the Secretary-General of the United Nations will also participate in related Summits.

The focus of discussions at the Summits will be on promoting cooperation on effective response to COVID-19 and its far-reaching impacts, strengthening ASEAN’s long-term resilience in response to future challenges and enhancing cooperation in the realisation of an ASEAN Community that is people-centred and leaves no one behind, as well as key regional and global developments.

On 13 November 2020, Prime Minister will also attend the 12th Mekong-Japan Summit to discuss promoting economic recovery, enhancing connectivity especially in rules and regulations, digital, and people-to-people, as well as sustainable development in the sub-region in accordance with the Sustainable Development Goals, and the 2nd Mekong-Republic of Korea (ROK) Summit to discuss cooperation under the 3 pillars and 7 focused areas of the Mekong-ROK which include (1) Culture and Tourism, (2) Human Resources Development, (3) Agriculture and Rural Development, (4) Infrastructure, (5) Information and Communication Technology (ICT), (6) Environment, and (7) Non-traditional Security Challenges in accordance with the New Southern Policy (NSP) of the ROK.

Preceding the Summits, H.E. Mr. Don Pramudwinai, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of Thailand, will attend the ASEAN Foreign Ministers’ Meeting, the 22nd ASEAN Political-Security Community Council Meeting, and the 28th ASEAN Coordinating Council Meeting via videoconference on 10 November 2020 to prepare for the 37th ASEAN Summit and Related Summits. These ministerial meetings will discuss relevant preparations, follow up on ASEAN’s collective response to COVID-19 and ASEAN Community-building efforts as well as exchange views on important regional and international trends and issues.
