On the occasion that the Honorable Joseph R. Biden, Jr. sworn in as the 46^th President of the United States on 21 January 2021 (Bangkok Time), Gen. Prayut Chan-o-cha, Prime Minister of Thailand, has sent a congratulatory letter to President Biden.  In his letter, the Prime Minister applauded President Biden’s historic presidential election victory that reflects the trust, confidence, and hope the American people have placed upon the President. With more than  200 years of friendship and Thailand being the United States’ first and oldest treaty partner in Asia, Thailand takes pride in our strategic partnership with the United States, which has contributed not only to the mutual benefit of the two countries and peoples, but also to security, stability, and prosperity in the region.

           Additionally, while every country around the world is facing divisiveness, conflicts and ruins amplified by the pandemic, the Prime Minister stressed that the most important thing is that we have to turn towards each other and collaborate and Thailand is prepared to walk
side by side with the United States in this journey.

          The Prime Minister expressed his readiness to work closely with President Biden and  his Administration to reinvigorate the long-established Thailand-United States relations and multi-faceted cooperation in all levels. The Prime Minister also looks forward to an opportunity to welcome President Biden and the First Lady in Thailand in the near future.

          On behalf  of  the  Thai  people  and  the  Royal  Thai  Government,  I have the great honor to extend to you our sincere congratulations upon your inauguration as the 46^th President of the United States of America. Your historic victory with the highest number of votes ever cast in the United States’ election history, amid all challenges, is indeed a reflection of the trust, confidence,  and hope that the American people have placed upon you.

          With the strong ties of friendship between our two countries dating back over 200 years and with Thailand being the United States’ oldest treaty partner in Asia, we take great pride in our strategic partnership that has progressed through thick and thin. Our enduring alliance and multi-faceted cooperation have contributed not only to the mutual benefit of our two countries and peoples, but also to security, stability, and prosperity in the region.

          As you said so eloquently on the day prior to the assumption of your office – “to heal, we must remember”. The world must heed these words, so we can start mending and putting back together all the broken pieces and heal the hurt. Every nation has experienced a fair share of divisiveness, conflict, and devastation, amplified in multitude by the pandemic. All of us have been trying to find the best way per our particular context and narrative to bridge the gaping divide, resolve our differences, and rise up above. If the pandemic has taught us anything, it  is  that as the world is going through a historic change, the most important thing is for us to turn towards each other, not against one another, and collaborate. Thailand, as the United States’ first and oldest treaty partner in Asia, is prepared to walk side by side with you on this journey.

          I very much  look  forward  to  working  closely  with  you  and  your Administration to reinvigorate our long-established  relations  and  deepen our multi-faceted cooperation bilaterally,  regionally,  and  globally.  On this  note, I would also like to extend my standing invitation to you and the First Lady to visit Bangkok, and hope to have a chance to welcome you in the near future.
