On 26 September 2024, Mrs. Eksiri Pintaruchi, Permanent Secretary for Foreign Affairs met with H.E. Mr. Luís Manuel de Magalhães de Albuquerque Veloso, Ambassador of the Portuguese Republic to Thailand, who paid an introductory call on the Permanent Secretary.

On this occasion, both sides discussed ways to enhance and strengthen bilateral cooperation in diverse areas, especially in promoting the exchange of high-level visits, protecting and promoting legitimate rights and interests of Thai nationals living in Portugal, negotiating and signing of the Agreement between the Portuguese Republic and the Kingdom of Thailand on the Exemption of Visas for Holders of Diplomatic, Official or Special Passports. Furthermore, both sides also discussed about the convening of the 3rd Thai - Portuguese Political Dialogue in Bangkok at a mutually convenient date.

Portugal was the first Western nation to establish contact with Thailand in 1511 during the reign of King Ramathibodi II in the Ayudhya Period. In addition, in 1820, King Buddha Lertla Naphalai granted the land on the east side of the Chao Phraya River to the Portuguese to establish the Consulate of the Portuguese Republic, being the oldest foreign Embassy in Thailand.
