During 3-4 April 2025, Her Excellency Ms. Paetongtarn Shinawatra, Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Thailand, welcomed His Excellency Mr. Narendra Modi, Prime Minister of the Republic of India, on the occasion of his official visit to attend the 6th BIMSTEC Summit in Bangkok. It was Prime Minister Modi’s first official visit to Thailand and marked the 78th Anniversary of Thailand-India diplomatic relations.

 

During the bilateral meeting on 3 April 2025, both Prime Ministers expressed satisfaction with the longstanding and enduring friendship between Thailand and India. Both leaders had fruitful discussions on bilateral relations spanning over centuries and across various areas. They agreed to continue the exchange of high-level visits and to enhance defense cooperation, including in defense industry. Thailand and India will work closely to create an environment conducive to free trade and more investment, as well as to strengthen the cooperation among Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises and startups. Both leaders were pleased with the long-standing people-to-people contact, which will be enhanced through tourism, education, and cultural cooperation. Apart from exchanging views on regional and global issues to promote peace and stability, Prime Minister Shinawatra and Prime Minister Modi also expressed condolences to the victims of the recent Earthquake in Myanmar, where Thailand and India were committed to provide humanitarian assistance and support to restoration of the affected areas.

 

Taking into consideration the dynamism of Thailand-India relations, both Prime Ministers announced the elevation of Thailand-India relations to a Strategic Partnership. This marks a new chapter of enhanced cooperation and aspiration to realize the full potential of Thailand-India relations. The two leaders also witnessed the exchange of 5 Agreements and MoUs between India and Thailand.

 

Prime Minister Shinawatra also presented the Sajjhaya Phonetic Edition of Tipitaka to Prime Minister Modi as a gift of peace and wisdom from the people of Thailand. The special edition of the Tipitaka is part of the celebration of the auspicious occasion of His Majesty King Maha Vajiralongkorn’s 6th Cycle Birthday Anniversary on 28 July 2024.

On 4 April 2025, His Majesty King Maha Vajiralongkorn and Her Majesty Queen Suthida graciously granted the Prime Minister of the Republic of India a Royal Audience at the Amphorn Sathan Residential Hall, Dusit Palace.

 

Prime Minister Shinawatra and Prime Minister Modi also visited Wat Phra Chetuphon Wimon Mangkhalaram Rajwaramahawihan to pay homage to the historic Reclining Buddha, a famous site in Thailand popular among international tourists.
