On February 18, 2025, the Royal Thai Consulate-General in New York officially registered the first same-sex marriage of a Thai couple in the United States under Thailand’s Marriage Equality Act, which came into effect on January 23, 2025.
On this historic occasion, Miss Somjai Taphaopong, Consul General of Thailand in New York, served as a witness to the marriage registration, congratulated the couple, and hosted a celebratory event in their honor. The event was attended by officials and staff of the Royal Thai Consulate-General.
The enactment of the Marriage Equality Act reflects the Thai government’s commitment and dedication to advancing human rights, equality, diversity and inclusivity for all. Thailand is proud to be among the pioneering countries in Asia to recognize same-sex marriage.
The Royal Thai Consulate-General wishes to congratulate the couple on this memorable event. Thai nationals in the U.S. who wish to register their marriage under the Marriage Equality Act may contact the Consulate for registration procedures via our website or reach out for further inquiries and appointment scheduling at [email protected].
