The Ministry of Foreign Affairs held a meeting to discuss ways to concretise cooperation under the Ayeyawady-Chao Phraya-Mekong Economic Cooperation Strategy (ACMECS) between the Mekong Cooperation Unit of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Thai ACMECS Business Council and the Joint Standing Committee on Commerce, Industry and Banking (JSCCIB).
On 2 April 2021, Mrs. Arunrung Phothong Humphreys, Ambassador Attached to the Ministry, chaired a meeting to discuss ways forward for the Ayeyawady-Chao Phraya-Mekong Economic Cooperation Strategy (ACMECS) between the Mekong Cooperation Unit of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Kingdom of Thailand and the Thai ACMECS Business Council and the Joint Standing Committee on Commerce, Industry and Banking (JSCCIB). The meeting was attended by Mr. Kobsak Duangdee, Secretary General of the Thai Bankers' Association (TBA) and Chairman of the Thai ACMECS Business Council, together with representatives from the JSCCIB, Board of Trade of Thailand, Federation of Thai Industries, TBA and Ministry of Transport.
The Meeting discussed various approaches to move forward cooperation under ACMECS in a concrete manner, particularly with active participation of the Thai private sector in ACMECS projects which aim at benefiting the Mekong sub-region as a whole. The Meeting also agreed that ACMECS could play a significant role in cross-border trade and investment by promoting an ecosystem conducive to digital economy, e-payment, migrant workers’ remittances facilitation, harmonisation of rules and regulations, and development of Common Control Area. These measures will strengthen economic solidarity and bring about common prosperity of ACMECS Member States which comprise 5 Mekong countries, namely Thailand, Cambodia, Lao PDR, Myanmar and Vietnam.
