On 16 June 2023, H.E. Mr. Sarun Charoensuwan, Permanent Secretary for Foreign Affairs of Thailand, co-chaired the 8th Meeting of Japan-Thailand Political Partnership Consultations (JTPPC) with H.E. Mr. YAMADA Shigeo, Senior Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan, at Sattabongkot Room, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Thailand, to discuss way forward in advancing the “Comprehensive Strategic Partnership” between Thailand and Japan.

On this occasion, both sides discussed approaches to advance the already close cooperation between Thailand and Japan through the JTPPC and other existing bilateral mechanisms, including High Level Joint Commission (HLJC), DG-Level Talks, Politico-Military/ Military-Military Consultations (PM/MM) and Japan-Thailand Economic Partnership Agreement (JTEPA). They also agreed to further strengthen cooperation under sub-regional, regional, and international frameworks, particularly Mekong-Japan Cooperation, ACMECS and ASEAN. As Thailand and Japan have continued to play a constructive role in the region for a long time, particularly on development cooperation in Mekong sub-region, the two countries reaffirmed their commitment to work together for the progress in this field.

In addition, both sides also exchanged views on regional and international issues of mutual interests, including situation in Myanmar, Korean Peninsula, Ukraine and geo-political challenges, and agreed to closely consult and coordinate their positions on regional outlooks and developments in geo-politics through the existing bilateral mechanisms. Furthermore, as this year marks the 50th anniversary of ASEAN-Japan relations, Thailand and Japan as Country Coordinators for ASEAN-Japan Dialogue Relations, are committed to working closely with all ASEAN countries to further promote ASEAN-Japan relations and chart a course for future partnership.
