On 17 August 2022, H.E. Mr. Don Pramudwinai, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of Thailand and H.E. Dr. Subrahmanyam Jaishankar, Minister of External Affairs of India, co-chaired the 9th Meeting of Thailand - India Joint Commission for Bilateral Cooperation (JC) in Bangkok.

At the meeting, Thailand and India agreed to revitalise the momentum of cooperation that was affected by the COVID-19 pandemic and to promote exchanges of visits and dialogues between the two countries. On defense and security, the two sides agreed to strengthen cooperation, especially in the area of cyber security. On economic issues, both sides welcomed the increase in the bilateral trade volume which reached a new record at USD 14.9 billion in 2021 and agreed to reconvene the 2nd Joint Business Forum as well as establish a platform for exchange of information between startup and unicorn companies between the two countries. On connectivity, the two sides agreed to expedite seamless connectivity by land, sea and air, through expediting the India-Myanmar-Thailand Trilateral Highway project, as well as review the air services agreement. On socio-cultural cooperation and tourism, both sides welcomed the resumption of tourism between the two sides, as India has become one of the leading countries for tourists to Thailand in 2022 and aimed to return the number of tourists to pre-COVID-19 levels at 2 millions tourists per year. Both sides also stressed the importance of promoting cooperation in the North Eastern Region of India. Cooperation in science, technology, and consular affairs were also discussed, as well as the expedition of pending MoUs between the two sides.

Collaboration in regional and global fora was an important topic of discussion, especially under the ASEAN-India Framework which is celebrating the 30th anniversary this year. Both sides agreed to expedite cooperation through BIMSTEC as Thailand is the current chair for the year 2022 – 2023, under the theme of PRO BIMSTEC-- to promote prosperity, sustainability, and openness, as well as readiness to counter the challenges after the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic. The Ministers also agreed to work together under other sub-regional and regional frameworks ranging from ACMECS, MGC, BIMSTEC, IORA and ACD, as well as the United Nations. Furthermore, both sides also exchanged views on regional and multilateral issues of mutual interest such as the Indo-Pacific, and maritime cooperation.

After the JC Meeting, the two Ministers signed the Agreed Minutes of the meeting and witnessed the signing ceremony of 2 MoUs: (1) Memorandum of Understanding between the Department of Medical Services of Ministry of Public Health of Thailand and the Indian Council of Medical Research of Department of Health Research, Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, India; and (2) the Memorandum of Understanding for Cooperation and Collaboration between Thai Public Broadcasting Service, Thailand, and Prasar Bharati, India.
