On 19 - 20 May 2025, Mrs. Prangtip Kanchanahattakij, Deputy Director-General of the Department of International Economic Affairs, attended the 27th Meeting of the Indian Ocean Rim Association (IORA) Committee of Senior Officials Meeting (CSO) under the theme “Strengthening Regional Architecture: Reinforcing Indian Ocean Identity,” chaired by Sri Lanka via videoconference.
The mandate of the IORA CSO is to review the work progress of IORA working groups and various cooperation projects under the framework, as well as the finance and administration of the IORA Secretariat. The CSO also discusses and provides policy recommendations to the IORA Council of Ministers (COM). At the 27th IORA CSO, Thailand stressed the importance of the cooperation in blue economy and sustainable development. Along those lines, the prioritized areas included fishery resources management, aquaculture as well as regenerative tourism which could be executed through the participation of local communities in the Indian Ocean region.
The Indian Ocean Rim Association was established in 1997. Currently, the framework comprises 23 member states and 12 dialogue partners. The objective of the Association is to promote cooperation in the Indian Ocean region in various areas such as the blue economy, fisheries, academic, science and technology, climate change, sustainable development, as well as maritime security and safety.
