The Ministry of Foreign Affairs hosted a meeting to advance the implementation of the Global Compact on Refugees and the Global Compact for Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration to ensure the country’s migration policies be in line with its long-standing humanitarian tradition and to enhance development objectives supported by a whole-of-government and whole-of-society approach.
On 24 February 2021, Mr. Nadhavathna Krishnamra, Director-General of the Department of International Organisations, hosted the first meeting for 2021 of the Inter-Agency Working Group on the Implementation of the Global Compact on Refugees (GCR) and the Global Compact for Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration (GCM) at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The meeting followed up on progress in the implementation of Thailand’s commitments in the context of the GCR and GCM, while ensuring that the country’s migration policies reflect its long-standing humanitarian tradition, consistent with its international obligations, while enhancing development objectives, supported by a whole-of-government and whole-of-society approach.
The meeting also included an exchange on the preparations for the Thai delegation’s participation in the Asia-Pacific Regional Review of Implementation of the Global Compact for Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration, which will be convened from 10 to 12 March 2021 at the United Nations Conference Centre in Bangkok. The Regional Review would be an opportunity for Thailand to share its approaches, experiences, and best practices on migration management with other countries in the Asia-Pacific region, paving the way for more comprehensive discussions at the International Migration Review Forum scheduled for 2022.
