Madam Co-Chair, Executive Secretary Armida Salsiah Alisjahbana,

Excellencies,

Distinguished participants,

  1. It is my pleasure to co-chair this High-Level Brainstorming Dialogue with Madam Executive Secretary of UNESCAP. I appreciate ESCAP’s continued collaboration in co-organising this Dialogue over the years.
  2. This Dialogue has been instrumental in advancing ASEAN-UN partnership in the SDG implementation. As ASEAN is working towards a green ASEAN under the forthcoming ASEAN Community Vision 2045, this partnership will be crucial to leverage the inter-linkages in SDGs implementation.

Excellencies, Distinguished Participants,

  1. As we gather today, the world faces profound challenges, from the worsening impacts of climate change
and environmental degradation to rising inequality and
rapid technological disruption. I would like to highlight some key areas as our way forward to advance ASEAN’s progress toward a sustainable and resilient future.
  2. First, building resilience against climate change is crucial. Recognising our exposure to rising sea levels, extreme weather, and environmental degradation, including the devastating effect by recent Typhoon Yagi, ASEAN must take the lead in building climate resilience by integrating sustainable practices across sectors, especially in disaster preparedness and response. Strengthening our collective ability to adapt will secure the region’s future as climate risks continue to grow.
  3. Second, green financing is a vital pillar in driving ASEAN’s sustainable development. We must encourage capital investment and create innovative financial tools that empower businesses, especially MSMEs, to transition towards a greener and low-carbon economy. Expanding access to
green finance will unlock economic opportunities while ensuring an inclusive transition that leaves no one behind.
  4. Third, energy transition is essential for both sustainable development and long-term economic resilience. ASEAN must speed up its own transition from fossil fuels
to cleaner energy sources. By investing in clean energy infrastructure, we will not only meet environmental goals but also enhance ASEAN’s competitiveness in the global green economy.
  5. Fourth, effective digital transformation. In today’s digital world, technology plays a crucial role in shaping sustainable development, from the growth of EVs to telemedicine. ASEAN must continue prioritizing equitable access to digital infrastructure and connecticity to promote sustainable industrialization, foster innovation, and improve livelihoods across the region. It can help us manage resources better, improve energy efficiency, and ensure inclusive and equitable access to quality education and health-care serviceS for all. Digital solutions are also essential for monitoring and preventing disasters, ensuring a safer and more resilient future for all.
  6. Finally, none of these pillars can thrive in isolation. By fostering collaboration and partnerships across ASEAN and support from external partners, we can drive both sustainable energy solutions and a vibrant digital economy that benefit all. Through teamwork among governments, businesses, communities and other relevant stakeholders, and by sharing best practices and supporting one another, we can accelerate the acheivement of the 17 SDGs in all countries, and effectively implement the ASEAN Community Vision 2045.

Excellencies, Distinguished Participants,

  1. To achieve the SDGs by 2030 and ensure a sustainable future for ASEAN, Thailand remains dedicated to working closely with all partners to ensure a sustainable and prosperous future for ASEAN.
  2. I wish this Dialogue every success and look forward to the practical outcomes that will emerge from our discussions today.
  3. Thank you.
