On 28 September 2024, H.E. Mr. Maris Sangiampongssa, Minister of Foreign Affairs, had a bilateral meeting with Mr. Antonio Guterres, United Nations Secretary General (UNSG), during the 79th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA79) in New York.

The Minister confirmed that Thailand’s new government stands ready to fully work with and wishes to have a more active role in the United Nations (UN). He also emphasised how Thailand houses a number of UN agencies and has diverse groups of personnel with expertise and experience in international affairs, so he would like to see more Thai people work in UN agencies, especially after the member states agreed for the UN reform to promote inclusivity and efficiency as stated in the Pact for the Future, the outcome document of the Summit of the Future.

In this regard, the UNSG is ready to welcome Thai people at the UN and hope to work together at full capacity. He also asked Thailand to continue to be an honest broker and a bridge builder, which is not the role that any country could do, to help realise the Pact for the Future to be truly implemented towards concrete outcomes. The UNSG also hopes that Thailand could play more roles in the UN, which includes adapting the sufficiency economy theory to enhance sustainable development of the UN.
