On 3 February 2026, H.E. Mr. Sihasak Phuangketkeow, Minister of Foreign Affairs, met with H.E. Mr. Péter Szijjártó, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade of Hungary, during the latter’s official visit to Thailand as a guest of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Both sides discussed ways to enhance cooperation in trade and investment, water resources management, agriculture, energy, science and technology, education and sports. They also exchanged views on national, regional and global developments, including Thailand - EU relations, cooperation within international organisations, the situation in the Middle East, the situation in Myanmar, the Russia - Ukraine situation, the general elections of Thailand and Hungary and the Thailand - Cambodia border situation.
The Hungarian side expressed its intention to pursue a readmission agreement to facilitate permit arrangements for Thai workers and to explore the potential launch of direct flights between Budapest and Bangkok in the near future. The Hungarian side also expressed support for the visa facilitation for Thai frequent travelers travelling to the Schengen countries through the EU’s visa cascade regime. In addition, both sides expressed appreciation that bilateral trade value grew by 10% in 2025 and agreed to increase the trade value to 1 billion USD in the near future.
The two ministers also witnessed the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding between the Ministry of Higher Education, Science, Research and Innovation of the Kingdom of Thailand and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade of Hungary on Cooperation within the Framework of the Stipendium Hungaricum Programme for the Years 2026 - 2028, providing 40 scholarships annually to Thai students to study in Hungary.
Afterwards, the Foreign Minister hosted a working dinner for H.E. Mr. Szijjártó and his delegation. Also in attendance were the Deputy Permanent Secretary of Higher Education, Science, Research and Innovation, the President of the Hungarian-Thai Chamber of Commerce, and the President of the University of the Thai Chamber of Commerce.
