On 8 December 2025, H.E. Mr. Sihasak Phuangketkeow, Minister of Foreign Affairs, presided over “The Relaunching of the Thailand - Africa Initiative (TAI),” at The Sukosol Hotel, Bangkok, to reaffirm Thailand’s policy towards Africa, known as the Thailand - Africa Initiative, and Thailand’s commitment to strengthening relations with the African region in all dimensions. The event was attended by high-level representatives from African countries, especially H.E. Mr. Yusuf Tuggar, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, the Diplomatic Corps in Thailand, representatives of international organizations, as well as relevant stakeholders from the Thai public and private sectors.

The Foreign Ministers of Thailand and Nigeria also witnessed the signing of a MoU on the cooperation between Kasetsart University and the Africa Rice Center concerning research and the development of local African rice varieties, aimed at enhancing food security in the African region. This was part of the official visit to Thailand of the Nigerian Foreign Minister, to strengthen bilateral relations and discuss the implementation of joint cooperation under the Thailand - Africa Initiative, in alignment with the African Union’s Agenda 2063, as well as Nigeria’s and the African region’s current approaches to sustainable development.

The Thailand - Africa Initiative, first launched in 2013, is Thailand’s foreign policy to advance cooperation between Thailand and African countries. In response to the evolving global context, its approach has been refined to focus on strengthening cooperation in four pillars: political, economic, development, and global strategic cooperation. The Initiative aims to promote mutual interests between Thailand and Africa in a more structured, consistent, and sustainable manner, as fellow developing partners.
