Congratulatory Message on the 45th Anniversary
of the Establishment of Diplomatic Relations
between the Kingdom of Thailand and the United Mexican States
The 28th of August 2020 marks the 45th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the Kingdom of Thailand and the United Mexican States. The Department of American and South Pacific Affairs and the Embassy of the United Mexican States in Bangkok wish to extend our warmest congratulations on this auspicious occasion and for the close and cordial ties that have long bound and benefited our two countries and peoples.
The relationship between Thailand and Mexico is a significant part of the historical linkage between the two regions that date back to the 16th Century commercial exchanges through the “Manila Galleon” or “Acapulco Galleon” trade route. Since then, our relations have gradually prospered and expanded, with bilateral trade remaining one of theirs vital elements. Thailand is currently the 3rd trading partner of Mexico in the South Pacific region and its 13th in the world, while Mexico is Thailand’s top trading partner in Latin America and the Caribbean. Through our countries’ strategic locations as gateways to our respective regions, we look forward to promoting closer economic cooperation and wider areas of activities, including investment, tourism, manufacturing, agriculture, digital economy and logistics.
The long-standing ties between Thailand and Mexico have also been cemented by high-level dialogue. The high-level visits, particularly the Royal Visit to the United Mexican States in 1996 of His Majesty King Maha Vajiralongkorn Phra Vajiraklaochaoyuhua, when His Majesty the King was holding the title of the Crown Prince of Thailand, have contributed to strengthening the two countries’ relations. We will continue to promote high-level dialogue and meetings through safe and manageable channels, including the 4th Meeting of Political Consultations and Other Matters of Common Interest between Thailand and Mexico, to be chaired by Thailand by the end of this year.
On multilateral and global fronts, we will carry forward our collaboration through various international frameworks, such as the United Nations, the Forum for East Asia-Latin America Cooperation, the Pacific Alliance, the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation Forum and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations. The two countries also have in common their intention to support international efforts in tackling the current pandemic of COVID-19, as well as other global challenges.
Last but not least, people-to-people ties are another key area whereby Thailand and Mexico will strive to foster closer partnership, building on similarities in such areas as gastronomy, popular cultures and other cultural activities. The growing friendship and understanding between Thais and Mexicans will serve as a solid foundation for many more areas of our future cooperation that will mutually benefit our countries and peoples in the years to come.
