Thailand has been re-elected to the Commission on Narcotic Drugs (CND) for the term 2020-2023 at the elections held during the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) meeting at the UN Headquarters in New York on 7 May 2019. Thailand has served as a member of the CND for several consecutive terms since it was first elected in 1973.
Thailand is one of the 8 countries from the Asia-Pacific region elected to the CND this time. Other countries also elected include Japan, Kazakhstan, Nepal, Pakistan, Bahrain, Turkmenistan, and China.
CND is a functional commission under the ECOSOC and the governing body of the United Nations Office of Drugs and Crime (UNODC) in the field of drugs and a central policy-making body within the United Nations dealing with illicit drugs. Thailand attaches great importance to combating drug trafficking and addressing drug problem. Thailand’s constructive contributions in the CND are well recognised, particularly through the promotion of the United Nations Guiding Principles on Alternative Development.
