On 2 May 2019, H.E. Mr. Vitavas Srivihok, Ambassador and Permanent Representative of the Thailand to the United Nations in New York, deposited Thailand’s instrument of ratification for the International Convention for the Suppression of Acts of Nuclear Terrorism (ICSANT) to Ms. Arancha Hinojal, Head of Treaty Section, United Nations Office of Legal Affairs, on behalf of the United Nations’ Secretary General, as a depositary of the Convention, making Thailand the 116th State Party to the Convention.
ICSANT is a key international instrument on the nuclear disarmament and non-proliferation fronts. The Convention aims at building an international legal architecture against the threats of nuclear terrorism, covering a wide range of acts and possible targets. The Convention also encourages cooperation among States Parties in order to assist each other in responding and preventing threats arising from nuclear terrorism.
Becoming party to this vital multilateral framework has reaffirmed Thailand’s commitment in global nuclear disarmament and non-proliferation, showcasing Thailand’s determination to further strengthen the country’s nuclear safety and security standards and practices. It is also an opportunity for Thailand to develop and engage in a network of international cooperation and assistance, which will benefit the country’s current and future efforts in the nuclear safety and security context.
