1. On 1 March 2019, H.E. Mr. Songphol Sukchan, Ambassador of Thailand to Indonesia and Mrs. Piyachanid Suthinont Sukchan, spouse had an audience with H.M. Sri Sultan Hamengkubuwono X, Governor of Yogyakarta.

Both sides reiterated the long-standing close ties between the royal families of Thailand and Yogyakarta since H.M. King Rama V visited Yogyakarta in 1896, and reffirmed readiness to further enhance the relations and cooperation between Thailand and Yogyakarta in several areas. These include agricultural and alternative development under Thailand's royal initiatives, culture and exchanges of textiles, tourism and the promotion of air connectivity, education of Thai Muslim students in Yogyakarta, collaboration between universities of Thailand and Yogyakarta, digital economy and e-commerce as well as sister city cooperation between Chiang Mai and Yogyakarta.

2.​ On 1 March 2019, H.E. Mr. Songphol Sukchan, Ambassador of Thailand to Indonesia together with Mrs. Piyachanid  Sukchan, spouse and officials from the Royal Thai Embassy in Jakarta met with Prof. Dr. Yudian Wahyudi, Rector of UIN Sunan Kalijaga Yogyakarta.

H.E. the Ambassador expressed his appreciation to the Rector and university staff for taking good care of around 40 Thai students currently studying at UIN Sunan Kalijaga Yogyakarta and commended the University’s effort in promoting moderate Islam. Indonesia is the second largest overseas destination for Thai Muslim students in the world, currently hosting around 2,000 Thai students.

Both sides also expressed their willingness to further strengthen collaboration between UIN Sunan Kalijaga Yogyakarta and Thailand in several areas including Halal research, exchanges of lecturers, researchers and students, collaboration in Quality Assurance, curriculum harmonisation and standardisation, the promotion of Thai culture and food at UIN Sunan Kalijaga Yogyakarta and the promotion of the teaching of Thai and Indonesian languages at Indonesian and Thai universities, respectively. Until today, Thai universities have signed MOUs on cooperation with at least 111 Indonesian universities.

H.E. the Ambassador was also invited by the Rector to give a special lecture on “Thailand – Indonesia Relations and Education Collaboration” to more than 200 Indonesian, Thai and other foreign students studying at the University. H.E. the Ambassador highlighted the long-standing and close relations between Thailand and Indonesia as each other’s strategic partners, with education being one of the most robust areas of cooperation. He also emphasised that the Thai and Indonesian students are the futures of the nations, and that everyone is like an “Ambassador” as they play a major part in Thailand – Indonesia relations.

On this occasion, a number of Indonesian lecturers and students also expressed their interest in pursuing their further study in Thailand as well as strengthening collaboration with Thailand.

3. On 3 March 2019, H.E. Mr. Songphol Sukchan, Ambassador of Thailand to Indonesia together with Mrs. Piyachanid  Sukchan, spouse and officials from the Royal Thai Embassy in Jakarta  met with 50 Thai students in Yogyakarta and learnt about the students’ living conditions and support they need from the Embassy.

H.E the Ambassador also paid a visit to the Students’ Association Houses sponsored by the Embassy and handed  the emergency kit backpacks prepared by the Embassy to the students.

4. On 4 March 2019, H.E. Mr. Songphol Sukchan, Ambassador of Thailand to Indonesia together with Mrs. Piyachanid  Sukchan, spouse and officials from the Royal Thai Embassy in Jakarta met with Dr. Gunawan Budiyanto, Rector of Universitas Muhammadiyah Yogyakarta. UMY is currently hosting around 30 Thai students and has extensive collaboration with 8 universities across Thailand, including in research and exchanges of lecturers and students.

H.E. the Ambassador expressed his appreciation to UMY for taking good care of Thai students, and reaffirmed that he will promote as ever Thai students to come to study in Indonesia as a forefront moderate Muslim country. He also reiterated that Thailand does not wish to see Thai students be exposed to radicalisation or separatism. Currently, Indonesia is the second largest overseas destination for Thai Muslim students, hosting around 2,000 Thai students, while Yogyakarta is one of the most popular destinations in Indonesia among Thai students with around 300 Thai students in total.

H.E. the Ambassador also expressed his appreciation to Muhammadiyah and UMY for continuously extending scholarships to Thai students. At present, Thai students make up the majority of foreign full-time students at UMY (40%).

Furthermore, both sides discussed various ways to further promote educational collaboration between UMY and Thailand, including the possibility to increase the number of scholarships the Thai government offer to Indonesian lecturers and students, the organisation of Thai language courses for Indonesian students in Thailand, joint research cooperation, exchanges of lecturers, researchers and students, collaboration in Quality Assurance, curriculum harmonisation and standardisation, and the promotion of Thai culture and food at UMY. Until today, Thai universities have signed MOUs on cooperation with at least 111 Indonesian universities.

On this occasion, H.E. the Ambassador was also invited to attend the opening ceremony of the International Tropical Farming Summer School 2019 at UMY. There are two Thai students joining the course and 25 other Thai students participated in the opening ceremony.

During his speech,  H.E. the Ambassador stated that the course is a testimony to the shared commitment between Indonesia, Thailand and other countries to achieve the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 2030. He also cited “the New [Agriculture] Theory” initiated by His Majesty the late King Bhumibol (King Rama IX) which focuses on creating an Integrated and Sustainable Agricultural System by applying the essential principles of His Majesty’s Sufficiency Economy Philosophy (SEP). H.E. the Ambassador emphasised that Thailand International Cooperation Agency (TICA) under the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Thailand has offered scholarships for training courses on SEP and Master’s degrees to foreign countries and has organised training projects for many countries both of which Indonesia can also take part in.  Last but not least, H.E. the Ambassador stated that all Thai and Indonesian students are the futures of the nations, and that everyone is also like an “Ambassador” as they play a major part in Thailand – Indonesia relations.
