During 14 – 15 November 2018, H.E. General Prayut Chan-o-cha, Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Thailand, attended Related Summits between ASEAN and Dialogue Partners, Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP), and bilateral meetings with leaders attending the 33rd ASEAN Summits and Related Summits in Singapore.
The Prime Minister and leaders of ASEAN Member States had meetings with leaders of ASEAN’s Dialogue Partners including the People’s Republic of China, Republic of Korea, Russian Federation, Japan, and the United States, as well as attending ASEAN Plus Three Summit, and East Asia Summit.
Moreover, the Prime Minister also attended Informal ASEAN Summits with Australia and India, as well as the Working Lunch hosted for ASEAN Leaders and Guests of the Chair namely Chile (Chair of APEC in 2019), Canada (current G7 President), and the International Monetary Fund.
The Prime Minister addressed important issues which Thailand wished to push forward such as promoting regional connectivity, building strategic trust, advancing regional peace and stability, and strengthening an ASEAN-Centred regional architecture, building cooperation networks on key regional and inter-regional issues based on the principle of 3M’s - mutual trust, mutual respect and mutual benefit. The Prime Minister also placed importance on enhancing a community that leaves no one behind, and promoting sustainability in all meetings.
During the 2nd RCEP Summit, the Prime Minister expressed hope for progress of RCEP negotiations by the end of this year and, as Chair of ASEAN in 2019, Thailand will continue to push for a conclusion of the negotiations.
On the sidelines of the 33rd ASEAN Summit and Related Summits, the Prime Minister held bilateral meetings with the President of Russia, President of Chile, Prime Minister of New Zealand, Prime Minister of India, Prime Minister of Australia, and Premier of the State Council of the People’s Republic of China to discuss strengthening bilateral relations, political-security issues, economic cooperation, connectivity, investment in the Eastern Economic Corridor (EEC), cooperation within ASEAN frameworks, and Thailand’s role as the Chair of ASEAN in 2019.
On 15 November 2018, the Prime Minister represented Thailand in the handover of the ASEAN Chairmanship from the Prime Minister of Singapore during the closing ceremony of the 33rd ASEAN Summit and Related Summits. On this occasion, the Prime Minister announced the theme of Thailand’s ASEAN Chairmanship “Advancing Partnership for Sustainability” and the logo which will be used throughout the ASEAN Chairmanship during 1 January - 31 December 2019.
