The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Kingdom of Thailand and the International Organization for Migration (IOM), will host the 3rd Global Compact for Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration – Stakeholder Workshop on 18 January 2018 at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Bangkok, Thailand.

The workshop aims to create awareness on the Global Compact for Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration (GCM) and to provide a platform where views and recommendations from all sectors in Thailand can be heard. These opinions will be distilled and help to form a consolidated Thai position, which shall be used in the GCM negotiation process beginning in February 2018. The focus of the 3rd workshop will be on designing the way forward for GCM implementation to enhance the social inclusion of migrant populations in host communities.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the IOM had previously held GCM Stakeholder Workshops on 11 August 2017 at Tak Province and on 17 October 2017 at Samut Sakhon Province with key focus on promoting human rights of migrants through safe migration, including health and education and enhancing cross-border cooperation and governance of migration in all its dimension to combat smuggling and trafficking of migrants.

The Royal Thai Government places importance on migration management, particularly labor migration management and has adopted a comprehensive approach of welcoming legal labor migrants to make Thailand’s labor management system more effective and sustainable. This has helped ensure that the rights of all migrants are protected as well as prevent migrants from falling prey to human trafficking syndicates.
