Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Kingdom of Thailand delivered a statement at the High-Level Plenary Meeting of the Assembly to Commemorate and Promote the International Day for the Total Elimination of Nuclear Weapons, emphasising the need to advance nuclear disarmament and non-proliferation and calling upon countries to consider becoming party to the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons (TPNW) as it is coming close to the required 50 parties for the Treaty to enter into force.

On 2 October 2020, H.E. Mr. Don Pramudwinai, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Kingdom of Thailand, delivered Thailand’s statement via pre-recorded video, at the High-Level Plenary Meeting of the Assembly to Commemorate and Promote the International Day for the Total Elimination of Nuclear Weapons, held during the 75th Session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York, USA.

The Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs emphasised the need to advance nuclear disarmament and non-proliferation and stated that the world today still faces the danger of nuclear weapons, in spite of 75 years since the events at Hiroshima and Nagasaki. He stated that international security should not rest on the capacity to harm, but on the mutual trust forged between nations and especially on multilateralism. Therefore, as the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons (TPNW) is coming close to the required 50 parties for the Treaty to enter into force, Thailand calls upon countries to consider becoming party to the Treaty.

As the 10th Review Conference of the Parties to the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons was postponed to 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs calls upon the international community to strengthen efforts to advance nuclear disarmament, including through reaching out to the people to promote disarmament education and dialogue.
