Ministry of Foreign Affairs, in collaboration with the Embassy of Spain, organised the celebration of the 150th anniversary of Thai - Spanish diplomatic relations to commemmorate the bilateral relations that have expanded to cover trade, investment, education, STI, tourism and culture. The event featured a series of activities including Spanish speech contest and academic seminar on Thai-Spain relations.

On 10 September 2020, H.E. Mr. Vijavat Isarabhakdi, Vice Minister for Foreign Affairs of the Kingdom of Thailand and Mr. Jesada Katavetin, Deputy Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Kingdom of Thailand, delivered opening remarks during the celebration of the 150th anniversary of Thai - Spanish diplomatic relations, organised by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Kingdom of Thailand and the Embassy of Spain, at Eastin Grand Sathorn Bangkok. The one-day celebration comprised a series of activities including (1) the speech contest in Spanish language at higher education level whereby Mr. Jakkrit Chiwaraphut from Thammasat University was awarded the first prize, (2) the academic seminar participated by speakers with in-depth knowledge on Thai - Spanish relations in various dimensions, including H.E. Mr. Emilio de Muguel Calabia, Ambassador of Spain to Thailand, Mr. Luis Lopez, Counsellor, Commercial Office, Embassy of Spain to Thailand, Mr. Jose Sanchez, President of Spanish - Thai Chamber of Commerce, Associate Professor Dr. Somjai Phagaphasvivat, Dr. Piemsak Hongjamrassilp, lecturer from Thammasat University, Assistant Professor Dr. Sukij Poopuang, lecturer from Chulalongkorn University, and Ms. Nilobol Pimdee, Counsellor, Ministry of Foreign Affairs. On this occasion, Dr. Anuson Chinvanno, Director of the International Studies Center, was the moderator for the seminar, and (3) the networking lunch inaugurated by the Vice Minister for Foreign Affairs of Thailand, with a pre-recorded remarks by H.E. Mrs. Cristina Gallach, Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs for Ibero-America and the Caribbean, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, European Union and Cooperation of Spain, and followed by presentations on Thailand’s investment opportunities by Dr. Luxmon Attapich, Deputy Secretary General, Eastern Economic Corridor Office of Thailand, Mr. Carlos Romero, Chief Executive Officer, Amadeus Asia, and Mr. Angel Burgos, General Manager, Indra Sistemas S.A..

Thailand and Spain established diplomatic relations on 23 February 1870. The cooperation between the two countries has expanded to cover a wide array of dimensions, ranging from trade, investment, education, STI, tourism and culture. Currently, there are several highschools and universities in Thailand offering Spanish language learning as major and elective courses. Both countries have also developed cooperation in multilateral arena, such as in the framework of United Nations, European Union, and the Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM).
