เมื่อวันที่ ๒๙ พฤศจิกายน ๒๕๖๖ นายวราวุธ ภู่อภิญญา เอกอัครราชทูต ณ กรุงเวลลิงตัน ได้ยื่นพระราชสาส์นตราตั้งพระบาทสมเด็จพระปรเมนทรรามาธิบดีศรีสินทรมหาวชิราลงกรณ พระวชิรเกล้าเจ้าอยู่หัว ต่อ His Highness Tuimalealiifano Vaaletoa Sualauvi II ประมุขแห่งรัฐเอกราชซามัว ณ ทำเนียบประมุขแห่งรัฐ เพื่อแต่งตั้งให้ดำรงตำแหน่งเอกอัครราชทูตไทยประจำรัฐเอกราชซามัวอีกตำแหน่งหนึ่ง
ประเทศไทยและรัฐเอกราชซามัวได้สถาปนาความสัมพันธ์ทางการทูตระหว่างกัน เมื่อวันที่ ๑๕ พฤษภาคม ๒๕๒๑ และมีกลไกความร่วมมือทั้งระดับทวิภาคี ระดับภูมิภาค และระดับพหุภาคีอย่างต่อเนื่อง ตั้งแต่ปี พ.ศ. ๒๕๓๘ เป็นต้นมา ไทยเริ่มให้ความร่วมมือเพื่อการพัฒนาแก่รัฐเอกราชซามัว โดยเน้นด้านการพัฒนาทรัพยากรมนุษย์ในรูปแบบการให้ทุนฝึกอบรมและทุนการศึกษาระดับปฏิญญาโทนานาชาติอย่างต่อเนื่อง นอกจากนี้ รัฐเอกราชซามัวเป็นหนึ่งในประเทศสมาชิกผู้ก่อตั้งกรอบการประชุมหมู่เกาะแปซิฟิก (Pacific Islands Forum: PIF) ซึ่งเป็นองค์กรความร่วมมือระดับภูมิภาคของประเทศและดินแดนในมหาสมุทรแปซิฟิก จัดตั้งขึ้นเมื่อปี พ.ศ. ๒๕๑๔ และมีกลไกความร่วมมือสำคัญกับไทย คือ Thailand-Pacific Island Countries Forum (TPIF) ซึ่งไทยได้ริเริ่มจัดขึ้นเมื่อปี พ.ศ. ๒๕๕๗ เพื่อดำเนินงานความร่วมมือเพื่อการพัฒนาแก่ประเทศหมู่เกาะแปซิฟิก
การเดินทางเยือนรัฐเอกราชซามัว ระหว่างวันที่ ๒๘-๓๐ พฤศจิกายน ๒๕๖๖ เอกอัครราชทูตฯ และข้าราชการสถานเอกอัครราชทูตฯ ได้เข้าเยี่ยมคารวะและหารือข้อราชการกับนาย Tuala Tevaga Iosefo Ponifasio รองนายกรัฐมนตรี/รักษาการนายกรัฐมนตรี และนาง Desna Solofa รักษาการปลัดกระทรวงการต่างประเทศ รวมถึงเจ้าหน้าที่ระดับสูงของรัฐเอกราชซามัว ในการส่งเสริมความร่วมมือระหว่างไทยกับรัฐเอกราชซามัว ในด้านต่าง ๆ อาทิ ด้านเกษตรกรรม ด้านการท่องเที่ยว ด้านสาธารณสุข ด้านเศรษฐกิจการค้าและการลงทุน และการพัฒนาอย่างยั่งยืนโดยน้อมนำหลักปรัชญญาเศรษฐกิจพอเพียงไปใช้ในการยกระดับความความอยู่ดีมีสุขของประชาชนชาวซามัว รวมถึงพบปะชุมชนไทยที่อาศัยอยู่ในรัฐเอกราชซามัวด้วย
On 29 November 2023, Mr. Waravuth Pouapinya, the Thai Ambassador to New Zealand and also accredited to the Independent State of Samoa, presented a letter of credence from His Majesty King Maha Vajiralongkorn Phra Vajiraklaochaoyuhua, King of Thailand, appointing him as Ambassador to the Independent State of Samoa, to His Highness Tuimalealiifano Vaaletoa Sualauvi II, Head of State of the Independent State of Samoa, at the Head of State Official Residence, Vailele.
Thailand and the Independent State of Samoa established diplomatic relations on 15 May 1978 and have since developed continuous cooperation at bilateral, regional and international levels. Since 1995, Thailand has extended cooperation to the Independent State of Samoa, focusing on human resource development through training grants and scholarships at the international graduate level. The Independent State of Samoa is one of the founding members of the Pacific Islands Forum (PIF), a regional organization of countries and territories in the Pacific Ocean established in 1971. Thailand and the Independent State of Samoa have also cooperated through the Thailand-Pacific Island Countries Forum (TPIF), initiated by Thailand in the year 2014, to enhance development cooperation for the Pacific Island countries.
During the official visit to the Independent State of Samoa from 28-30 November 2023, the Ambassador had called on Mr. Tuala Tevaga Iosefo Ponifasio, Deputy Prime Minister/Acting Prime Minister, and Ms. Desna Solofa, Acting Chief Executive Officer of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade (MFAT), as well as high-level officials of the MFAT of Samoa. The discussions covered cooperation between Thailand and the Independent State of Samoa in various areas, including agriculture, tourism, public health, trade and investment, and sustainable development, guided by the principles of Sufficiency Economy to increase the well-being and happiness of the people of Samoa. During this visit the Ambassador had also met with the Thai Community residing in the Independent State of Samoa.
