เมื่อวันที่ ๑๘ พฤศจิกายน ๒๕๖๖ นางกรรณมน เสนาณรงค์ อุปทูตฯ ณ กรุงเวลลิงตัน ได้เป็นประธานพิธีเปิดงานเทศกาลลอยกระทง ประจำปี ๒๕๖๖ ณ มหาวิทยาลัยวิคตอเรีย กรุงเวลลิงตัน วิทยาเขตเคลเบิร์น โดยมีนายเรย์ ชัง สมาชิกคณะกรรมการสภาเมืองเวลลิงตันเป็นแขกเกียรติยศ และนายศุภวุฒิ สุภานันท์ ประธานคณะกรรมการบริหารสมาคมคนไทยในกรุงเวลลิงตัน นางสิริอณัฐพร วอร์บอยส์ ที่ปรึกษาสมาคมฯ และนางสาวนิรชา ศรีบุญวงษา ประธานชมรมนักศึกษาไทยของมหาวิทยาลัยวิคตอเรีย กรุงเวลลิงตัน เป็นคณะผู้จัดงาน ซึ่งได้รับความร่วมมือร่วมแรงใจจากทั้งชุมชนไทยและนักศึกษาไทยในกรุงเวลลิงตันเป็นอย่างมาก มีผู้สนใจเข้าร่วมงานกว่า ๕๐๐ คน  

ประเพณีลอยกระทงมีปรากฏทั้งในอินเดีย พม่า ลาว และกัมพูชา ตรงกับวันขึ้น ๑๕ ค่ำ เดือน ๑๒ ตามปฏิทินจันทรคติ ซึ่งในปีนี้ตรงกับวันจันทร์ที่ ๒๗ พฤศจิกายน ๒๕๖๖ เป็นประเพณีที่จัดขึ้นเพื่อเป็นการสะเดาะเคราะห์และขอขมาต่อพระแม่คงคา โดยในฤดูน้ำหลาก บรรดาผู้อาศัยน้ำในการเพาะปลูกจะทำกระทงเพื่อลอยไปกับสายน้ำ เพื่อแสดงถึงความขอบคุณพระแม่คงคาหรือสิ่งศักดิ์สิทธิ์ที่ประทานน้ำและความอุดมสมบูรณ์สำหรับการเพาะปลูกมาให้ นอกจากนี้ ประเพณีลอยกระทงยังช่วยเสริมสร้างความรักสามัคคีผ่านการพบปะสังสรรค์ ร่วมดำเนินกิจกรรม และร่วมสนุกสนาน อีกทั้งยังมีคุณค่าต่อการทำนุบำรุงพระพุทธศาสนา ผ่านการทำบุญทำทาน ถือศีล และรำลึกถึงพระธรรมคำสอน นอกจากนี้ ประเพณีลอยกระทงยังทรงคุณค่าต่อสังคม ความเอื้ออาทรต่อสิ่งแวดล้อม และสร้างความตระหนักรู้ถึงความสำคัญของแม่น้ำลำคลอง 

นอกจากกิจกรรมลอยกระทงแล้ว ยังมีการแสดงศิลปวัฒนธรรมต่าง ๆ ของไทย อาทิ การแสดงนาฏศิลป์ไทย ระบำสุโขทัย รำเทพบันเทิง ระบำดอกบัว รำกลองยาว รำรากไทย รำวงดาวพระศุกร์ รำวงชาวทะเล รำวงเพลงลอยกระทง การสาธิตมวยไทย การสาธิตการทำกระทง และการเดินแบบชุดไทย ตลอดจนการจัดบูธนำเสนออาหารและเครื่องดื่มของไทยซึ่งที่เป็นที่นิยมในหมู่คนไทยและชาวต่างชาติ โดยได้รับความร่วมมือจากร้านอาหารไทยในกรุงเวลลิงตันในการนำอาหารไทย อาทิ ส้มตำ ผัดไทย แกงเผ็ด ลูกชิ้น หมูทอด ไก่ทอด ฯลฯ มาจัดจำหน่าย รวมทั้งการจำหน่ายสินค้าไทย อาทิ ผ้าไทย และเครื่องจักสานต่าง ๆ ซึ่งได้รับการตอบรับเป็นอย่างดีจากผู้เข้าร่วมงาน นอกจากนี้ ภายในงานยังมีกิจกรรมตอบปัญหาความรู้เกี่ยวกับประเทศไทยเพื่อรับรางวัล และการเปิดคลิปวีดิทัศน์ประเพณีลอยกระทงจากการท่องเที่ยวแห่งประเทศไทย (ททท.) ให้ได้รับชมอีกด้วย

กิจกรรมดังกล่าวนอกจากจะเป็นการสืบสานคุณค่าทางวัฒนธรรมของประเพณีลอยกระทงที่มีมาแต่โบราณ ยังเป็นการสร้างความสามัคคีความร่วมแรงร่วมใจแก่ชมชุนไทยให้มีความใกล้ชิดกันอีกด้วย ซึ่งช่วยเสริมสร้างภาพลักษณ์อันดีของไทยให้เป็นที่รู้จักแพร่หลายในหมู่ชาวนิวซีแลนด์

  Loy Krathong Festival in Wellington 2023

On 18 November 2023, Ms. Kanamon Senanarong, Chargé d'Affaires, a.i., the Royal Thai Embassy, Wellington, presided over the opening ceremony of the Loy Krathong Festival in Wellington 2023 with Mr. Ray Chung, Member of the Representatives from Wellington City Council as guest of honour and Mr. Supphawut Supanan, President of Wellington's Thai Community, New Zealand, Mrs. Sirianattaporn Worboys, Advisor to the Association and Miss Niracha Sribunwongsa, President of the Thai Students’ Association, Victoria University of Wellington as the joint organisers. The event took place at The Hub, Kelburn Campus, Victoria University of Wellington (VUW.), with more than 500 Thai and foreigners participating.

The Loy Krathong Festival, a cultural event similar to Thailand, also takes place in India, Myanmar, Laos, and Cambodia on the full-moon night of the 12th lunar month according to the lunar calendar this year, which falls on Monday 27 November 2023. In the flood season, people who depend on waterways for their cultivation will place a Krathong, which is a flower basket of various sizes, on the water. The floating of Krathong is meant to pay gratitude to the Goddess of Water. Loy Krathong Festivals in all regions of the country may differ in detail, but they share a cultural value that reinforces the bonds of unity between families and communities and contributes to Buddhism and Thai society as a whole. Loy Krathong provides the opportunity for family members to carry out activities together and can help promote unity and affection among people through socialization and joyous activities, as well as contribute to Buddhism, as people take this opportunity to make merit, observe Buddhist precepts, and practice Buddhist teachings. Moreover, The Loy Krathong Festival is also significant to the society, as it encourages people to care for the environment. The festival creates awareness of the importance of rivers and canals.

The Loy Krathong activity shows the performance of various cultural arts of Thailand;  traditional Thai dances such as Sukothai Dance, Thep Bun Terng Dance, Lotus Flower Dance, and Long Drum Dance, and joining in singing and dancing of Loy Krathong songs, Thai boxing demonstrations, making Krathong, and traditional Thai costume fashion show. The event included the sale of Thai food as well as other products from Thailand that are popular, Q&As about Thailand, and the opening of a video clip of the Loy Krathong tradition from the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT). 

The festival has existed since ancient times. Cooperation among the Thai community helps to strengthen the unity of the Thai community. This is a good opportunity to promote the Thai Soft Power in New Zealand.
